Apparently I was too fast to judge SEGA about the character design.
While I couldn't care much less about Sonic's arms being peach or blue, the centered mouth bothers me. It reeks of the creepy emoting of Sonic Shuffle and SA2 a mile away. The company did good shoving the mouths on Sonic characters to the side, and it was kind of established since (I believe) before Sonic 2006. Why the sudden change?
But looking at the concept art above, there may still be hope.
Artwork belongs to the owners of Sonic Boom.
It was my favorite cameo of his.
Maybe he'll be in the second one?
Sonic: You know you want it...
Now that I think of it, it really seems easier to emote than the side mouth. It is also necessary for some vowels and espressions, for example the second one in the top row, or the left-hand one in the bottom.
But I learned about Sonic from Sonic X (for a long time it was the only source - compared to the US my country really lacks in that department), and the side mouth kinda burned itself into my mind.
I'm glad to see most of the community so accepting of the color change.
To be honest, I was never that religious about drawing the mouth to the side, because it seemed a little strained (how many mammals have sidemouths?)
But the sidemouth sure helped to make him distinct (and more sarcastic looking) -- I'll admit that!
Well, it's a matter of the media which draws one to the fandom. For me it was Sonic X (I quickly ditched the interest in it in favour of the Archie comics and games), and the sidemouth has grown on me like nothing else.
And it doesn't strike me as such unnatural as you may think. My theory holds that the mouth is actually on the underside of the muzzle, and what we see on the front or side view is an orthographic projection somewhat distorted by the perspective and the animators' intent to emote more effectively.
From many years ago, I recall trying to draw Shadow looming over somebody, and I needed him to smirk while maintaining a worm's eye view. Drawing that mouth in the perfect position was such a pain that I rearranged the scene.
if the top row is 1, 2, 3 and the bottom is 4, 5, 6 then:
5 + 6 look creepy to me ....
I tried to come up with an explanation myself, but I guess the design of Sonic-styled characters work only as a mind shortcut. After looking up some pictures of Sonic's anatomical breakdown my motivation to rationalize broke down itself.
What I meant were mainly the mouths in the game trailer, which don't move from the center at all. However, when it comes to the design above, no. 6 does not look that bad, because it's a top view. No. 5 looks creepy, though.
i dont mind seeing the front mouth if its for a vowel or action - like sticking the tongue out.
im glad you agree 5 is creepy. 6 looks like someone has squished his head down and has derp eyes.
i would like to see the other head concepts released (tails, knuckles, amy).
I'd like to see Tails especially (he's my fav character if my comics didn't tell yet XD).
And I'd love to take a blunt instrument and have a little chat with whoever disapproved the original team concept pic saying "Tails looks alright, but those fan magnet cute eyes have got to go. Give him a hydrocephalus forehead while you're at it, kids'll love that."
